An MBA is a professional qualification gained from completing an MBA course at a business school. It stands for Masters of Business Administration. Typically, people working in investment banking and finance will work for 2-3 years out of graduate school, then complete an MBA and rejoin the industry (or move industries) at a higher level.
MBA's are not required, but are highly recommended in many industries. A commonly used term is '2+2' meaning working for 2 years out of grad school, then doing a 2-year MBA.
The actual value added of an MBA is highly debatable, some say you learn valuable business skills whilst others say it is a 2-year holiday for networking purposes. MBA's are very expensive, often costing up to $200,000 for the full 2 years.
