Reaching out to PE Co Founder

One of my best friends close family friend, Co Founded aPEfund that manages around $2-8 Billion. He is based in the New York but he comes to Australia for holiday every now and again. My friend tells me he is a good guy and him and I would get along well. I also get along very well with my friend's parents, they think very highly of me.

I'm starting university this year in Australia and I'm becoming more interested inPEand researching more. I would be willing to pay for my own flights and accommodation to work with his firm for however long for free. I think the cost of going to the US would be well worth it for the experience gained. How should I go about approaching him initially?
