Having doubts about sales career (Corporate Banking)
Currently a 1st year VP in Corp Banking in a product group at a large, non-BBbank. Spent my Analyst years at aBB. I realized I don't have the personality type to be a sales guy for the rest of my career.
Some of the other corporate bankers at my firm are stereotypical sales guys, while I take a different approach. I've realized that I have the most success when I'm being an advisor first rather than a salesperson, which in my case means continuously showing prospects/clients different deals that were done in the market (basicallyhighly detailedcomps), helping them strategize on optimal deal structures, and providing other market research/analytics. Sounds simple but the majority of guys on my team absolutely do not do this.
I had a performance review recently and the MD's gave me this feedback: "You're going to win deals simply because people trust you and what you offer. Clients are going to call you for your advice and research first and the opportunities to win business will follow just as you've shown us so far this year."
