ER -> HF; Leave MM for BB? Nuances inside..

I am currently working as an Associate (3-5+ years of experience) at a decentMMbank, relatively respected for their Research, covering the consumer/retail industry. I have atop 3MBA, aCFA, [insert random credential here], etc.

Right now I get 0 inbounds from funds, respected headhunters don't return my emails, looking for opportunities myself is notoriously difficult (maybe 3-4 finds/year), and networking with clients has obviously been more difficult in this WFH/zoom world - though starting to ease lately.

I have an opportunity to join a top 2/3 (JPM,BAML, MS, EVR) firm covering a lesserTMTindustry asan associate, with a path towards coverage in the near term (potentially a quicker path to coverage than at my current firm). I think you could argue the Consumer coverage at my current employer is more marquee than what I'd be covering at this new shop - though I'm probably not in a position to make that comment about it, frankly.

My question to those atHFsin hiring positions is this: would this move help me get into thisbuyside seat I've been looking for? Or is this just largely a lateral move with certain puts/takes?

Happy to chat via DM with more specifics.

IsTMTindustry very easy to learn? I don't see how you can have your own coverage in the near term if you don't have any experience inTMT. I don't think the move will help you landing a job atHFs, given that you will lose your consumer/retail sector expertise and need time to learnTMT.
