PE > Corp Dev

联想结束,没有路径,正在考虑选择。如果我想尝试继续并找到另一家公司或转移到企业风险/发展小组,那真的很挣扎。

Looking for some advice from folks who have made that move and any thoughts on things to look out for.

In my eyes a worst case scenario would be to land at a company that has Corp dev but for one reason or another it's extremely difficult to get a deal done (build vs buy culture, capital availability, only wanting to do a perfect deal, cheap).

You have a good profile to get a head of corpdev or directortitle at aMM波特科。这些角色最好经济学and can lead to aCFO role prettyquickly compared to a non-sponsor backed company.

The cons are that the companies can be boring and deals will be small. The other consideration that could be perceived as a con is that you'll position yourself as the finance and M&A guy.

I didn't make the switch myself fromPE到Corp Dev。我的第一个农作物开发工作是直接来自赞助商支持公司的银行业务。小组负责人是前PEguy with only 5-6 years of total experience.

No longer in corp dev but still have a couple friends at sponsor backed firms in director or higher roles. All of them have meaningful equity or carry incentives.

And in case you are wondering what I'm doing, I'm in a generalist role at an early stage startup. Not interested in corp dev anymore and my near term goal is to formally run ops or manage a P/L. Both of these paths involve being more in the weeds than corp dev but they align to my longer term goal of being a non-finance exec.

To be clear, the role is a generalist in the truest sense. There is a mix of ops, product, finance, and sales strategy work.

I found the role on LinkedIn. As to how to position yourself, it's not too hard. A lot of companies prefer consultants with prior startup experience but readily take bankers, internal strategy folks, and bizops people. It's just harder to make the jump the more senior you are. In any case, you just need to highlight the breadth of problems you solved in interviews and be polished in speaking and presenting. There are also some very data oriented take home cases.

What is the pay and progression potential like in a role like that? Assuming meaningful cash paycut but maybe some equity?

Pay is all over the place. The corp dev job out of banking paid $150k total cash comp about 3 years ago, and I don't think that's a crazy number to aspire for in a generalist/bizops/chief of staff type of position now. Now with a few years of total experience, my target cash comp is $190k but with more equity.

Exits/next roles are dictated by your reputation, project experience, interests, and company needs. If you do well alongside your company, you'll be a department head or VP and be well positioned for a healthy exit and have an excellent resume.

Edit: Realized you were asking for pay progression.

The pay past manager/director becomes way too variable to discuss in a meaningful manner. VP cash comp depending on what you are doing, stage of company, industry, and equity comp could be anywhere from $200k to $350k+. Equity can be life changing at this level of seniority if everything goes right at a company, so that makes it even harder to discuss. Note this last sentence applies to Series B, maybe Series C, or earlier stage companies.
