I've read elsewhere that while the week is generally shot, Friday nights and saturdays are usually pretty open. Can you comment on the validity of that? Sundays I've heard usually require a few hours of prep work.
Pretty accurate, the problem is due to news flow - an M&A, a regulatory change, a management change, you need to get back into the office (or turn on laptop if WFH) and start writing a note. And also the senior analyst / MD's 5 pm "simple quick analysis" which are usually neither quick nor simple.

90% of associates hours outside of earnings will be under 60 hours/week. M-Th Generally 7-7 (some variability there for events, big news/acquisition or something in coverage post close) and Fri 7-5 with minimal weekend work. Should have no problem with a fairly predictable schedule to make dinners/drinks/dates. Scheduling a vacation outside of earnings is generally not a problem, but I would say team dynamics play a bigger part. A smaller shop with just an analyst and 1 associate, your boss would have to "cover" your tasks that week so some can be more dickish about it than others. Bigger shops with an analyst and 2-4 associates, as long as all of the juniors aren't taking vacation the same week you should be fine. I'd also note, summer tend to be much quieter (buyside/corporates takes vacation, people with kids etc..) so it is even easier to get some time off in summer.

On a slow day my hours would be 830am-630/730pm but the kicker is you never know when news might come out on a stock you cover, and that can blow up your night if you have to write about it. Also your MD could ask for something at 4 or 5pm that takes a few hours so (at least in my experience) you never really know. Weekends are easy enough to plan dates as I had plenty of time to socialize, but I understand its not ideal as people don't like to waste a weekend day on a first date.
If you are currently in a relationship: its quite easy to maintain a relationship IMO. Yes my significant other complains I can't go on dates often during the week but I make plenty of time for her. Vacations aren't an issue.
As you may have read in otherERposts, your experience is highly dependent on your MD/senior analyst. My MD was a bit of a slave driver before COVID but has softened a bit since, and over the years I started to figure out work what was actually important enough to work late/work weekends etc.

Within my team, I see that the juniors are significantly less busy. The best way I can explain it is that the seniors have a ton of calls, and have to review and finish up anything that juniors do. Working on the west coast, hours for most analysts/associates are 6:30am until 3-5pm. During earnings of course you might have a day starting at 3am or ending late like 9pm. Then VPs/Directors and MDs generally work later hours but are less likely to be up early. So they might be 6:30 - 4pm and then during earnings might be 6:30 - 11pm. Friday's are generally done for everyone by 2 or 3 at the latest. Weekends almost guaranteed safe.
