Commuting by Boat to Work

So I might have the opportunity to live and work about a 5-10 mile boat trip or about 20 minute commute on the water with a 5-10 minute drive(total) on each end. Obviously I would consider this May-September. The total commute time by car could be 45 minutes-1:30, damn northeast traffic, but could be 25-30 by boat. Honestly this sounds kinda awesome, especially in July or if I get out early and can bring my fishing rod.

What is the most cost effective way to do this. There are launches on both sides, and marinas on both sides with parking spaces not an issue. Will moorings or slips be too expensive? Also what kind of boat will get be a solid mpg or gpm? I've been looking more recently at power cats, they seem to get good "mileage". Any other items I'm missing? Should i try and get a pilot house? Is it crazy launch the boat every day on each side and park at the office with trailer?

I know this is a pipedream but I am genuinely curious if you are a boater how you would do it.

I know nothing about boating but this is sick, so hopefully someone can help you out here.

Show me the incentive and I'll show you the outcome.

Yeah I know a few people who used to commute by boat in the summers, its definitely doable. Ideally going to want a boat that is easy and fast to launch solo, I wouldnt consider a cat/pontoon for that reason. Depending on the conditions on the body of water, a sub-25 foot center console or cuddy boat would be pretty sweet if you like fishing, theyre pretty versatile and relatively light. Just make sure you can tow the thing with your current vehicle...cant tell you the number of times ive seen people try to launch or pull their boats with underpowered suvs, terrible idea

I'm going to refrain from giving you advice since I don't know shit about boats, but this sounds like a lot of fun! Update us and tell us how it goes if you decide to do it.

i know a bunch of guys whose office is in Greenwich, and they take a fast boat from Long Island...much faster than driving

Read the title and instantly thought you lived in Staten Island.

He could easily live near Sandy Hook too. I used to know a couple people from around there who took the ferry to work. It's much easier than driving and taking the tunnel.

The only difference between Asset Management and Investment Research is assets. I generally see somebody I know on TV on Bloomberg/CNBC etc. once or twice a week. This sounds cool, until I remind myself that I see somebody I know on ESPN five days a week.

This is sick! Do it. Maybe get down to the marina and shoot the shit with the guy to see what he says. He'll probably have the perfect solution for you or can warn you about the 6 guys that have failed at it

I was also originally thinking it was you parking at one of the ferries at Atlantic Highland or NJ and just riding those. I was trying to imagine fishing off one of those guys ripping along.

Fuck traffic. And you'd easily have the best commute and stories from said commute.

As mentioned, please keep us updated on this

So you would not need a car on both ends. I mean, this sounds like a cool idea. If you can drive to your boat on one end, zip across the water and then walk to your destination that's pretty sweet. Interested to see what you decide - being in the North East you'll most likely have a limited Spring-Fall window to do so, and even then on rainy days/weeks could be messy but just get the right gear and set up.

There are alternate forms of transportation such as a motorcycle, one wheel, scooter, skateboard, electric skateboard....

I would bet money this is Boston/South Shore.NYChas like 2 public marinas. Boston's is right by the financial district.

If so, I REALLY hope you are on the Harbor side not the Bay side of Hull.

Could you just get a subscription to Freedom Boat Club? Can you take those boats to multiple locations?

No way I do this without a dedicated slip on both sides that you can leave overnight - could work though, just don't want to get caught in a squall. It will be very expensive, you're talking at least $5-10 grand for the slips per summer (if you can even get them - waiting lists are usually decades long), plus the cost of the boat/gas.

Honestly if I were to say where I would/could possibly have this opportunity it would give me away.

Absolutely agree, that's why I was thinking mooring might be more economical, or a boat under 22' that gets 5mpg or more. A 19' whaler center console.

But gas is expensive anywhere even 20 mpg by car is the same given the different distances and 5mpg on a boat. It is really the boat and mostly the slip. I've recently thought about bribing someone who handles the waitlist at the public marinas.

you're not going to be saving money, the sooner you accept that the better. Boats are money pits, they're guzzlers and gas is expensive on the water, the maintenance costs are high and they require a lot of work. You also will not be pulling your boat out on both sides, or either side. You'd have to change and get wet, it's a fairly long process that even on one side would wipe the time savings over driving and one day you're going to forget to put the drainage plug back in LOL.

You're going to want a slip on both ends. I'd recommend getting an electric scooter or something to go from marina to work and home.
